Long Trail: Day 15 (Zero Day in Waterbury)

September 28th, 2022: (0 miles)

When I woke up after a very restful night of sleep, I listened to the sound of rain against the roof. I smiled knowing I made the correct decision to take a zero day. Spending my previous 3 days hiking in the rain was not fun. I left myself a few days in case this situation came up, so getting to Canada was not a concern, and while the nights had been cold, the forecast did not show any snow incoming.

I haven’t stayed at many bed and breakfasts, but the Old Stagecoach Inn was the best one I’ve experienced. It was an all you can eat breakfast, and I made sure to take full advantage, I ordered obscene amounts of pancakes, bacon, and eggs.

I spent most of the day resting, but once the rain died down I wandered around Waterbury a bit. I had a great lunch at the Prohibition Pig. It was a BBQ bar that was celebrating Oktoberfest, so I ordered a brat, some chips and a German beer.

After some more exploring, I scheduled the local taxi service to take me back to the trail for tomorrow morning. John, the innkeeper was willing to take me, but he would not be available until after breakfast at 10am, and I wanted to start earlier than that.

I spent the rest of the day exploring the inn and learned about their history. It was built in the 1800s and it officially became an inn in the 1980s.

That night, I went to bed early in preparation for the Mansfield Section of the LT.

Author’s note: If you are hiking the Long Trail, or just visiting the area and need somewhere to stay, the Old Stagecoach Inn is a great option. All the employees are friendly, the rooms are eclectic and clean, the prices are reasonable for the area, and the breakfast is spectacular. You can’t go wrong.
