In-Depth Review
Mobility & Comfort:
With a more slim fit, one would think the fit and comfort would be negatively affected, but in my testing, that was not the case. I do not have a slender build at all, and I wore them on rugged sections of the Appalachian Trail. Going uphill and downhill over harsh, steep tread, I found the Deceptrs to be extremely comfortable. The gusseted crotch design and articulated legs allow for generous room and movement. I have owned numerous pairs of hiking pants, and these are by far the stretchiest I’ve worn.
Weather Resistance:
From my usage, these pants demonstrate above-average weather resistance. During testing, I hiked through a light rain and wet vegetation for approximately 2 hours, and they kept me bone dry. Further testing is required to see how they would hold up for a bigger rainstorm or snow. Their wind resistance was impressive as well. I spent twelve hours camping on an exposed summit with extremely strong winds, and they kept me warm. After nightfall, the temperature dropped to the low 40s Fahrenheit, so I layered them with merino wool long johns underneath, and they kept me warm the entire night. In addition, They have a UPF 50+ rating, which makes them excellent for sun protection.
Breathability:
The Kuhl Deceptr Pants have above-average breathability. I have not used them in the middle of the summer, but on a warm day with plenty of sunshine. I did not sweat very much, and they ventilated very well.
Durability:
On my hikes, the pants got caught on thorns and scraped on rock, and I knelt in dirt and other abrasive materials. They have held up without a scratch or blemish. I cannot attest to how they’d hold up going bushwhacking or doing more adventurous activities, but for hiking and backpacking, they are more than tough enough.
Style & Versatility:
These pants are hands down the most sleek and stylish hiking pants I have owned. Their tapered fit offers a more modern, fitted style instead of the typical baggy look that has plagued many other hiking pants. Whether in the wilderness or at a brewery, the Kuhl Deceptrs have you covered.
Features:
The Deceptrs have 7 pockets: 2 hand, 2 rear, 2 rear-thigh, and one small zippered pocket within the previously listed right rear pocket. Despite having so many pockets, they do not suffer from the cargo pants look and are still sleek and stylish. They also have belt loops for adding a belt if needed.
Specs/Weight:
The Kuhl Deceptr uses a blend of 76% nylon, 9% polyester, and 15% elastane. On my scale, they measured out to be ??? ounces. They are not the lightest hiking pants, but they are still very competitive in that category.
Last Word
In this hiker’s opinion, Kuhl’s Deceptr Pants are a great, versatile product. They are more style-conscious than most other hiking pants on the market while still offering premium breathability, weather resistance, and ruggedness. They are designed for hikers and backpackers who want a pair of pants that can also be worn in more casual settings.
For the ounce-counters like myself, the Deceptrs are heavier than some other options out there. If I were going on a long-distance hike, these probably wouldn’t be my first choice; however, for all other adventures where going ultralight on gear isn’t an absolute requirement, they are a great option.
