After a long day of hiking, the thing I look forward to most is eating a delicious meal. I spent years buying dehydrated dinners from the popular brands, and while most are fine, they aren’t exactly something I would want to settle for. Food is something to be enjoyed and savored, especially when you are out in the wilderness. It is the reward that awaits you between those tough miles.

Enter Backcountry Foodie!!!

I first learned about Backcountry Foodie in 2021 by listening to a podcast where its founder Aaron Owens Mayhew spoke about backcountry nutrition and packing more calorie dense food while lightening your overall weight. As someone who does their fair share of ounce counting, this piqued my interest.

I followed Backcountry Foodie on Instagram, and shortly thereafter, I received a direct message from her thanking me for the follow and asking if I needed anything. I told her I was planning a thru-hike and was looking to eat healthier on trail. She took time to give me helpful advice and she explained how her site could help ever further. After this experience, I immediately signed up for Backcountry Foodie.

A few months later, I was prepping all of the food for my long-distance hike of the Long Trail and all my dinners were from from Backcountry Foodie. Their meal planner tool helped so that I could stay organized and plan the amount of calories each day. I ate their recipes each of my 20+ days in Vermont, and ever since then, I use Backcountry Foodie on all my adventures.

They currently have 3 separate membership plans ranging from $36 to $72 per year. The lowest membership tier gives you access to over 200+ meal recipes. These include vegetarian-friendly, vegan, and gluten-free options. On the higher tiers, Backcountry Foodie provides resources like food journals, meal plans, a meal & calorie tool, and expert masterclasses.

In addition, Backcountry Foodie has so many different varieties of recipes. I’ve prepped and ate over 25 of them. The Taco Mac & Cheese is my favorite followed by the Hodgepodge Couscous, but I have not tried one I didn’t like. No matter which ones you make though, you are guaranteed to have an extremely calorie dense, lightweight, and delicious meal. They aren’t complicated either, you do not need to be experienced in the kitchen to create a masterpiece.

To take full advantage of these services, you will still need to get the ingredients and take time preparing/making the food. It can be time consuming, and some recipes require ingredients that need to be ordered online. With that being said, it is more than worth the time and effort. It is fun to mix all the ingredients together to create a great meal. It is like you are your own gourmet chef. Also, by prepping this way, you really get to learn on how to build more nutritious recipes and stay healthier on trail. By the end of it, you will be proud of your achievement.

In this hikers opinion, Backcountry Foodie is a steal, and it is worth every penny. It feels good to be able to support a fellow backpacker and small business who cares about the community. I cannot recommend them enough.
